Howell Chamber: Farmers' Market celebrates the 4th of July with baby back ribs, produce & live music

 

Date: Sunday, July 4, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and every Sunday through October

Location: State Street and Clinton Street, adjacent to the historic Livingston County Courthouse in downtown Howell

Celebrate the 4th of July holiday at the Howell Sunday Farmers' Market, hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Howell Downtown Development Authority. The market is open this Sunday, July 4 and every Sunday through October from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

Over 70 local growers, agricultural producers, artisans and crafts-people offer an array of products throughout the season. Don't miss the delicious assortment this Sunday, featuring:

·        Assorted produce including asparagus, snap beans, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, radishes, spinach, turnips, salad cucumbers and Oriental vegetables

·        Smoked baby back ribs

·        fresh meats including lamb, goat, duck and rabbit

·        certified organic raw cheese

·        fresh pasture-raised poultry and eggs

·        local honey

·        garden craft items, painted gifts and hand-crafted soaps

Local actress/singer Erin Caughey brings some musical flavor to the market for the holiday as she performs throughout the day. Caughey, who hails from Hartland, plays in an acoustic duo with local musician Jerry Sadler. Their repertoire of music ranges from current Billboard top 40, to blues and country, and Irish folk, playing everything from Allison Krauss to Kid Rock.

Howell’s Sunday Farmers’ Market

Howell’s Sunday Farmers’ Market welcomes market-goers with locally-grown and handmade wares at the 2010 Farmers’ Market in Howell. The market is hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Howell Downtown Development Authority. Major sponsor is First National Bank and the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus is the market’s media sponsor. Partial funding for the weekly entertainment is provided by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs and the Arts Alliance of the Ann Arbor Area.

8th Annual Howell Indendence Day Aquathlon & Open Water Swim

The Howell Independence Aquathlon is a unique multi-sport event which includes a 2K run, 750M swim and a final 2K run. Run takes place thru the Howell City Park and beautiful Lakeview Cemetery; swim portion takes place in Thompson Lake off of Howell City Park. We also have a one mile Open Water Swim. Awards will be given to all finishers of the events. Come enjoy the beautiful Howell City Park at Thompson Lake and these unique events. The all inclusive price allows you to participate in both events or choose one. Registrations taken on-line, by phone and in person before 7/1/2010.

 

$30.00 ($10.00 rebate for USAT members) $35.00 day of event.

Babysitters Training

 

This class will instruct students regarding the role of a babysitter and the responsibility and relationship of the babysitter to the parents and child. Topics include safety, basic childcare, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. The course materials will provide the babysitters not only with a handbook for use during and after the course but also a compact emergency reference guide and activity booklet to take with them to their job. A CD-ROM that contains a resume and business card template, an electronic babysitting organizer to store client information, interactive exercises to enhance learning and other features is also included in the participant's set. Bring paper, pencil and a sack lunch and snack. Instruction by the American Red Cross.

Summer Day Camp Registering Now!

 

 

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority is once again gearing up for some outrageous fun!  All packed into ten full weeks of Summer Day Camp.  Each week is jam packed with a variety of activities and non-stop fun to keep children ages 5-10 active   throughout the summer months.  Bring your friends and meet new ones while participating in fun and creative activities like sports, games, swimming, archery, fishing, computers, team building, cookouts, foam machine, slip-n-slides, arts, crafts and more!  Each week will have its own unique theme and we place special emphasis on character development (caring, honesty, respect and responsibility) rolling it into every activity.  We will start each day at the Barnard Community Center which is located in downtown Howell.  And every afternoon (weather permitting) we will take a short hike to Howell City Park to lay in the sun and play in the water on Thompson Lake.  Campers are required to bring their own lunch and drink each day to camp; we will however have snacks and drinks to keep their energy up throughout the day.

Crosstown Kid's Triathalon

The Crosstown Kids Triathlon is presented in partnership with the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority and Howell Area Aquatics Center.

 

This kids triathlon is for boys and girls ages 7-14. Age divisions will be based on child's age as of December 31, 2010. Age divisions include 7-8,9-10,11-12 and 13-14. Boys and Girls will compete separately. Participants will compete in swimming, biking and running. Below are the distances for each age division. 7-8: 50 yard swim, 2 mile bike, and .5 run. 9-10: 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike and .5 mile run. 11-12: 200 yard swim, 4 mile bike and 1 mile run. 13-14: 300 yard swim, 4 mile bike and 1 mile run.

 

Check in begins at 8:00am and event will start at 9:00am. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each age and gender category. *Each participant must bring a swim suit,bike, bike helmet and running gear.

 

Event will be held at the Howell Area Aquatic Center, on Sunday, July 25, beginnnig at 9:00am.

 

Cost will be $25 early and $30 the day of the event.

Tiny Tot Track & Field Competition

 

This local event will be held on Tuesday, July 20th, with Ronald McDonald doing the opening ceremony. The event will begin at 11:00am, and is open to children ages 3-8 and their parents. Each Olympian will receive a ribbon, medal and a gift certificate for a Happy Meal for his or her effort. Special events include: scooter races, tricycle track, miniature golf, sack race, soccer, baseball throw and so much more fun! This event sponsored by the Olinik Family McDonald's and Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority.

Event will be  held at Page Field.

Cost will be $4 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $6 for Mario and Genoa Township residents and $8 for non-residents.

Nature Art for Kids

 

Arts and craft projects themed on nature. Students will complete and take home one project per class. A variety of media will be explored to create. Garden art, picture frames, and nature prints will be        included. Instructor holds a masters degree in art education K-12 and has 20+ years teaching experience. A $25 material fee is due to the instructor the first day of class.

 

(Elementary-ages 8-11) Class will be held Monday-Thursday, June19-June 22, 9:00am-11:30am.

(Middle School-ages 11-14) ClassesMonday-Thursday,June19-June 22,1:00pm-3:30pm.

Skate Board Camp

 

This camp is presented by Skaters Advocate and Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority. This might just be the coolest skateboard camp on the planet. Come and learn the basic skateboarding skills like: ollie, kick-flip and riding a skateboard. Also during this camp you will design your own deck, watch a demo by the Skaters Advocate Skate Team, have a group photo taken, receive a camp T-shirt and have a chance to win tons of prizes that will be raffled off. Lunch and Dinner will be provided. Bring water bottle, sunscreen, helmet and skateboard to camp.

 

Camp will be on Saturday, July 17, from 10:00am-7:00pm and held at Parker Skate Park, behind the Howell High School Freshman Campus.

 

Cost will be $85 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $119 for Marion and Genoa Township residents and $170 for non-residents.

Gears & Gardens with Cycle Howell

On Saturday, July 10, 9am to 2pm, LACASA is thrilled to be teaming up  with Cycle Howell for the first ever Gears and Gardens Tour for a 20 mile ride. This is a special excursion to four Howell gardens featured on this year's LACASA Garden Tour Weekend. 

 

Beginning at the Bennett Recreation Center, bicyclists will visit the Gerhard, Ridenour and Hulbert gardens. This group will also join Mr. B and his bicycle entourage (who is pulling a 300 lb. piano behind his bike) as they travel in from Lansing for a special concert at Bader Acres & Gardens. Concert will be at 12:00 noon with some blues and boogie-woogie painist Mark Lincoln Braun.Tickets for Gears & Gardens are $8 each or $12 for the two-day Garden Tour Ticket, available at the first garden on the bike tour. 

 

This is a separate activity from the Cycle Howell Membership and has an additional cost.
